Renewable Technology Canvasser Job Specification

RenewBuild Group is looking for self-employed door-to-door canvassers to sell renewable technologies, including solar panels, batteries and heat pumps, in Birmingham, Yorkshire, Bedfordshire and London. This is a commission-only role with no cap on earnings. You choose when and how much you work.

About the role

You will knock on doors in agreed areas, explain how renewable technology can reduce energy bills and convert your leads into sales.

• Products: solar PV, battery storage, air source heat pumps and insulation
• Areas: Birmingham and the West Midlands, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Bedfordshire and London
• Contract: self-employed contractor; your point of contact is Odin van Dueren
• Funding routes you’ll explain: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme ( 7,500 towards a heat pump), government-backed low-rate finance through approved lenders, and private purchase

You book the survey. Our MCS-certified surveyors and installers handle the technical assessment, quotation and installation.

What the work involves

Canvass within the postcodes we cover, choosing your own days, hours and streets.

Respect no-cold-calling zones and no salespeople signs.

Introduce yourself with your ID badge and explain clearly who you are working with and why you are calling.

Have short, honest conversations about energy bills, the property and whether a survey makes sense.

Book survey appointments with accurate customer details.

Give every customer our leaflet with company contact details.

Pass any complaints or concerns about vulnerable customers directly to us.

Invoice us monthly for qualifying surveys and installations.

What we’re looking for

Essential

• Confident, friendly and comfortable talking to strangers
• Honest and respectful, and willing to take no for an answer
• Self-motivated and happy working outdoors in all weather conditions
• Registered as self-employed with HMRC, or willing to register
• Good spoken English and basic smartphone skills
• The right to work in the UK
• Willing to complete a basic DBS check

Desirable

• Experience in field sales, door-to-door canvassing, charity fundraising or customer service
• An interest in renewable energy or home improvement
• A full UK driving licence and access to a car
• Local knowledge of one of our areas
• Ability to speak a second language used in the communities we cover

Commission and contract

There is no basic pay. You are paid commission only, and there is no limit on what you can earn.

When a solar PV and battery or heat pump installation worth over 20,000 is completed

• Earnings: uncapped; top canvassers earn 7,000+ per month
• Hours: entirely your choice, with no minimum days or shifts
• Contract: self-employed; you invoice us monthly and pay your own tax and National Insurance
• Provided: an ID badge, leaflets and access to the support team; you supply your own phone and transport

Training and support

• A free induction briefing on our products, grants and finance options, and how to explain them accurately
• A compliance briefing on consumer protection and recognising vulnerable customers, which must be completed before you start
• Optional team sessions and a point of contact for support

Conduct and compliance

We are an MCS-certified, TrustMark-registered installer and a member of RECC. As a condition of the contract, every canvasser must follow our code of conduct:

• Always wear your ID badge and give your full name and our company name.
• Never say or imply that you are from the council, the government or the Warm Homes scheme, or that anything is free unless confirmed.
• Do not use pressure selling. Leave when asked, never return to a door where the resident has said no, and never stay after dark.
• Do not sign contracts or take payments at the door. You book surveys only.
• Take extra care with older or vulnerable residents and offer to return when a family member is present.
• Respect no-cold-calling zones and no salespeople signs.
• Handle personal data in line with our privacy policy and UK GDPR.

Breaching the code will result in termination of the contract.
