Full Time Agricultural Technician
$85,000 to $90,000 per annum plus superannuation

Summary
The Agricultural Technician provides technical support to commercial vegetable production by monitoring crops, soil, plant nutrition, environmental conditions and production systems across greenhouse and farm areas.

The role involves field observations, sampling, testing and data collection to identify crop health and production issues and support management in implementing appropriate cultivation, nutrition and pest and disease control measures.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct regular technical inspections of greenhouse and crop production areas to monitor plant establishment, growth, development, crop condition, maturity, yield performance and produce quality.
• Observe and assess crop health and growing conditions, identifying nutrient deficiencies, water or heat stress, abnormal plant development and other factors that may affect crop productivity, quality or yield.
• Collect soil, growing-media, water and plant samples and undertake or coordinate routine testing of moisture, nutrient conditions, pH, electrical conductivity and other indicators relevant to crop production.
• Monitor crop responses to fertiliser and nutrient applications and assist with the implementation and evaluation of approved crop nutrition and cultivation programs based on field observations and technical results.
• Inspect crops for pests, diseases, fungi, weeds and other plant health threats, record their incidence and severity, and support integrated pest and disease management measures, including monitoring crop responses following treatment.
• Monitor greenhouse environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity and ventilation, review information from environmental sensors and monitoring equipment, and assist with routine adjustments within established production parameters.
• Monitor the operation and performance of existing automated irrigation, fertigation and other crop-production technologies by reviewing operating data, crop condition, soil or growing-media moisture and environmental information to identify irregularities affecting crop performance.
• Conduct routine operational checks, testing and basic calibration of agricultural sensors, monitoring devices and existing production equipment, record faults or performance issues, and refer specialised repairs, system modifications or design matters to appropriately qualified personnel.
• Assist with crop trials and production assessments involving varieties, cultivation methods, plant nutrition and growing conditions by collecting technical observations and comparing crop health, development, yield, quality and other performance indicators.
• Collect, analyse and maintain agricultural production data relating to crop development, environmental conditions, agricultural inputs, treatments, harvest volumes, yield and produce quality, and prepare technical summaries and recommendations for management.
• Monitor crop maturity, harvest outcomes and produce quality, including grading, rejection and wastage information, and assist in identifying production factors affecting crop quality, yield and overall production performance.
• Maintain accurate technical, production and traceability records and provide practical technical support to farm personnel, ensuring activities are undertaken in accordance with established production procedures, workplace health and safety, food safety and environmental requirements.

Assessment Criteria

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate:
• Relevant agricultural, horticultural or agricultural technology qualification, or at least three years of relevant industry experience.
• Experience in commercial crop production, preferably greenhouse or intensive horticulture.
• Strong understanding of crop growth, plant nutrition, soil and growing-media conditions, and plant health issues.
• Experience collecting and recording soil, plant, water and environmental data in an accurate and structured manner.
• Ability to interpret crop and production data and identify key factors affecting yield, quality and plant performance.
• Experience with agricultural sensors, monitoring systems, greenhouse technology or automated production equipment.
• Working knowledge of irrigation and fertigation systems at an operational and monitoring level only.
• Experience conducting crop inspections, field assessments or agricultural trials.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports and production summaries for management review.
• Sound understanding of workplace health and safety, food safety and environmental compliance requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, outcomes-focused approach.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with management, farm staff and external specialists.
