Full Time Irrigation Designer
Salary Range $85,000 to $95,000 per annum
SUMMARY
The Irrigation Designer is responsible for designing, planning, assessing, and supporting irrigation systems to ensure efficient and sustainable water distribution across greenhouse and agricultural operations.
The role involves analysing environmental conditions, crop requirements, soil characteristics, water source availability, and hydraulic performance to develop irrigation solutions that maximise water efficiency and support crop productivity. The Irrigation Designer also assists with system upgrades, project implementation, compliance requirements, and ongoing optimisation of irrigation infrastructure in accordance with operational, environmental, and regulatory standards
Key Responsibilities
Irrigation System Design and Planning
• Conduct site assessments to evaluate land conditions, water sources, soil characteristics, greenhouse layouts, and crop irrigation requirements
• Design irrigation systems including drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, fertigation systems, and automated irrigation layouts suitable for greenhouse and open-field farming operations
• Prepare irrigation layouts, hydraulic calculations, technical drawings, and material schedules using irrigation design software and CAD programs
Hydraulic Analysis and Water Resource Management
• Perform flow rate, pressure loss, and hydraulic efficiency calculations to ensure reliable system operation and effective water distribution.
• Monitor irrigation performance and recommend improvements to increase water efficiency, reduce wastage, and support sustainable farming practices.
• Assist in implementing water-saving technologies including automated controllers, moisture sensors, filtration systems, and low-flow irrigation solutions.
Project Coordination and Technical Support
• Coordinate the installation, commissioning, and testing of irrigation systems to ensure compliance with approved plans and technical specifications.
• Liaise with suppliers, contractors, farm managers, and technicians regarding irrigation equipment, materials, and project requirements.
• Conduct inspections of existing irrigation systems and recommend upgrades, repairs, or modifications to improve operational efficiency and system performance.
Maintenance and System Optimisation
• Diagnose irrigation system issues including pressure irregularities, leaks, blocked pipelines, pump inefficiencies, and uneven water distribution.
• Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for irrigation infrastructure, pumps, valves, filters, and control systems.
• Provide technical guidance and operational support to farm staff regarding irrigation procedures, system operation, and basic troubleshooting.
Compliance and Reporting
• Ensure irrigation systems and related activities comply with environmental regulations, workplace health and safety requirements, and water usage standards.
• Maintain accurate records relating to irrigation system performance, maintenance activities, water usage, and operational improvements.
• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and recommendations relating to irrigation performance, sustainability initiatives, and future infrastructure improvements.
Qualifications and Skills
• Relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience in irrigation design, agricultural engineering, agricultural technology, or a related field
• Minimum 3 years of experience in irrigation system design
• Strong knowledge of irrigation system design principles including drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, filtration systems, pumps, valves, and automated irrigation controls
• Understanding of crop irrigation requirements, soil conditions, greenhouse operations, and sustainable water management practices
• Ability to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve irrigation system performance issues
• Desired but no essential: Proficiency in irrigation design and drafting software such as AutoCAD, IrriCAD, RainCAD, or similar programs; Experience in hydraulic assessment, installation coordination, and irrigation management within agricultural or greenhouse environments
• Strong organisational, communication, and coordination skills with the ability to work collaboratively with management, suppliers, contractors, and farm personnel
• Ability to prepare technical reports, drawings, material schedules, and maintenance documentation
• Commitment to workplace safety, environmental compliance, and sustainable agricultural practices
