Salary Range:
From $180,000 - $210,000 (dependant on experience + superannuation)
Role Purpose
The Principal Consultant is a role model within Mechanical Rock who drives delivery excellence, shapes client engagements, uplifts consulting capability, and supports the strategic direction of the business. They take a systems-thinking view of people, process, and technology- leading engagements, solving complex problems, coaching teams, and contributing to Mechanical Rock’s technical and delivery maturity.
Accountabilities:
1. Engagement Leadership & Client Partnership
Lead complex engagements and shape strategic direction for clients.
Key Activities:
Lead consulting engagements from discovery through delivery, balancing client needs with Mechanical Rock’s standards.
Facilitate alignment discussions, design sessions, and executive-level conversations.
Anticipate risks, trade-offs, and delivery constraints; make decisions that optimise business value.
Shape engagement direction through insight, experimentation, and evidence-based recommendations.
Ensure delivery excellence and successful client outcomes across multiple workstreams.
2. Complex Problem Solving & Systems Thinking
Solve the right problems, not just the obvious ones.
Key Activities:
Apply systems thinking to analyse problems across people, process, and technology.
Navigate ambiguity to find clarity and shape the problem alongside clients.
Develop approaches that optimise long-term outcomes rather than just short-term fixes.
Run experiments and measure results to verify improvement opportunities.
3. Technical & Delivery Excellence (Across All Streams)
Set standards for quality across Mechanical Rock’s consulting practice.
Key Activities:
Demonstrate mastery in core consulting craft.
Guide teams toward delivering high-quality, testable, maintainable solutions.
Ensure engineering practices, design approaches, or delivery frameworks are consistently applied.
Contribute to the refinement of Mechanical Rock’s playbooks and consulting toolkits.
4. Coaching, Mentoring & Developing Others
Build the capability of the consulting team- the Principal Consultants success is reflected in the growth of others.
Key Activities:
Mentor Senior Consultants and Consultants in both technical craft and consulting skills.
Offer clear feedback, coaching, and defined growth pathways.
Create learning opportunities through pairing, facilitation, and reflective conversations.
Support capability uplift across delivery, engineering, and design disciplines.
5. Thought Leadership & Community Impact
Shape Mechanical Rock’s voice, reputation, and contribution across the community and tech ecosystem.
Key Activities:
Create blogs, case studies, and technical articles that showcase Mechanical Rock’s expertise.
Present at meetups, conferences, and internal learning sessions.
Share insights and reusable IP to strengthen Mechanical Rock’s practice.
Represent Mechanical Rock as an active ambassador in the WA tech community.
6. Business Contribution & Strategic Influence
Help shape the growth, direction, and capability of the business.
Key Activities:
Offer strategic input on services, capability, delivery standards, and value propositions.
Work with Practice Leads, the CTO, and the Leader of Mechanical Rock on key strategic initiatives.
Spot opportunities for new offerings or ways to create more client value.
Contribute to bids, pre sales discussions, and commercial modelling when required.
7. Client Relationships & Value Creation
Strategically grow client accounts, own opportunity shaping, and represent Mechanical Rock commercially and technically.
Key Activities:
Build deep, advisory-level relationships with client leaders and decision-makers.
Lead discovery conversations, framing opportunities to add further value and identifying strategic opportunities.
Shape and validate follow-on engagements, including scope, approach, risks, and sequencing.
Proactively identify longer-term capability roadmaps and partnership opportunities.
Work closely with MEL and Consulting Lead to progress, qualify, and convert opportunities.
Promote Mechanical Rock’s brand and expertise across community, industry, and thought-leadership platforms.
Ensure opportunities align with Mechanical Rock’s strategy, value chain, and technical excellence principles.
REQUIRED SKILLS
On-premise and cloud infrastructure with both AWS and Azure experience including:
- Security: Cybersecurity, Risk & Incident Management, Disaster Recovery, Vulnerability
- Management, Application Security, DevSecOps, Information Security Governance
- Servers, Networks, Storage, SQL, Desktops
Delivery Leadership Experience including:
- Stakeholder and Vendor management
- Agile methodology
- Team leadership, coaching and mentoring
