The Chief State Epidemiologist (CSE) is a key leadership position for The Texas Department of State Health Services and functions within the executive team. This position is responsible for leading the Office of the Chief State Epidemiologist (OCSE) and serves as the department expert on epidemiological matters. Duties include providing data-driven expertise for public health activities and policies in Texas and serving as an agency representative and a point of contact for stakeholders, including federal agencies, national organizations, and Texas-based health departments, healthcare providers, and health organizations.
Applicants must be a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas, be board certified in a medical specialty, have at least 5 years of experience in public health, and have experience leading teams and managing people.
The ideal candidate has an advanced degree in public health or epidemiology, a strong public health background, a solid grasp of epidemiological methods and surveillance systems, and is comfortable with public speaking.
